How to calm an anxious child?

Published on: 14/December/2020

At the beginning of 2020, the world was hit by a pandemic accompanied by a nationwide lockdown that forced many to be confined to their home for security reasons. Shutting down of schools and a drastic change in the daily life of students caused kids to become anxious whether they understood the reason behind it or not. Not just adults but kids also are suffering from anxiety as a response to the changing times.

It is difficult for adults to express their state of being let alone children, thus it becomes very important that the guardians keep a tab on the emotional state of their kids. Engage with them to know what’s going on in their head and whether they need some assistance to maneuver whatever it is they are feeling. Let’s discuss some of the ways we can help kids in overcoming anxiety during these harsh times.

Talk to them:
Conversation is the key to every relationship in this world. Kids need special treatment, they need someone to talk to them on a regular basis as they are unable to express their feelings in a definite way. For an understanding of their state and how they are affected by a certain situation, we must know what’s going on in their mind. You can talk to them about their day, their studies, their hobbies, or in general what they like talking about. These conversations will ensure that you have a grasp on their mental state.

Encourage them to play and do some activities
Accompany and encourage your kids to indulge in activities. Anything that steers their thoughts away from what they can’t do is beneficial as it will emphasize to them what they can do. Playing interesting games with them, eating with them, going on a walk together are some examples of quality time you can spend with your kids.

Make a proper routine for them
A proper and disciplined routine contributes a lot to a healthy life and also helps in retaining a feeling that everything around is not that different from what is normal. Make your kids wake up on time, give them breakfast, make them attend online classes, offer them some tasty lunch, play games with them, make their favorite food for dinner, all these activities will make sure that your kid is in a healthy mental and physical condition.

Keeping in contact with their friends
Talking and interacting with friends is an essential part of school life. So it is paramount that your kids maintain contact with their friends as it will help in keeping them in high spirits and also provide them with someone of their age to get along and chat with. We must make sure that our children are having a regular conversation with their friends as it is a very important aspect of life that no one should miss.

New Hobbies
Encourage the development of new hobbies among your kids to better spend their free time like painting, gardening, crafting, dancing, singing, etc. We should make sure that kids are developing and growing on a regular basis, compliment them for their efforts and small accomplishments. This will ensure that their confidence is not hit and their learning is not delayed.
Kids are sensitive, while they may not understand the depth of what they are experiencing but they can still experience extreme discomfort and anxiousness during the lockdown. Adult guidance and assistance are necessary to alleviate anxiety and the negative emotions occupying their mind. Doing activities with them while maintaining a daily routine that provides some regularity in their lives is extremely beneficial. A messy day can contribute to a messy state of being. Understand your children and their thoughts by holding conversations with them and encourage your kids to make new hobbies to spend their time on. All of these can help in calming an anxious child
